Dayton, Ohio — Three Dayton-area high school graduates have been selected as recipients of the JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship.

Shapiy Sagiev, Chinonye Odumodu, and Jayla Martin will each receive $20,000 over four years ($5,000 renewable per year) to pursue their college degrees.

Sagiev is the 2020 inaugural recipient of the scholarship. He has completed his first year at The Ohio State University, where he is majoring in computer science and engineering. A 2020 graduate of Stebbins High School, Sagiev was active in track and field and wrestling and served as president of the Stebbins SkillsUSA chapter, where he helped organize and lead a community blood drive. A member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer in the Link freshman orientation program, he also served as president of the Math Club, where he tutored underclassmen.

Odumodu, a 2021 Trotwood-Madison High School graduate, will attend Wright State University with an anticipated major of medicine. In addition to being the valedictorian of her class, she was an active member of the Press Club, Drama Club, Student Government, National Honor Society, National Society of Leadership and Success, Tennis Team, and Badminton Team. Her service to the community included volunteering at her church, making crafts for hospitalized children, and assisting with tornado recovery efforts.

Martin, also a 2021 Trotwood-Madison High School graduate, will attend Cedarville University to major in nursing and pursue her dream of becoming a neonatal nurse. Recognized for academic excellence, she served others through her work at Montgomery County Jobs and Family Services, Creative Corner Childcare, and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. Her impact on the community included working with Building Bridges, serving as a Girl Scout Youth Leader, and taking part in her church’s tornado relief and Love Dayton efforts.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the educational journey of these outstanding young people,” said JJR Solutions Chief Executive Officer Dave Judson. “Each is an inspiration not just because of how they’ve already served others in their young lives, but because of what they are going to do in their bright and boundless futures to make an even bigger positive difference in this world.”

Established in 2019 through The Dayton Foundation, the JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship fund rewards students who exhibit courage, resolve, character, and positive influence in their communities.

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior from a select group of Dayton-area school districts

  • Be accepted to a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in Ohio

  • Demonstrate financial need

  • Demonstrate an active role in community involvement and/or extracurricular activities

  • Write an essay telling how they made a positive difference or inspired others

“Last year we awarded our first-ever Starfish Scholarship to Shapiy,” shared Judson, “and so we’re doubly excited to give out two more this year. Our goal is to award at least 10 of these scholarships by 2025.”

“Being able to contribute to the education of young people in our community is completely in line with our purpose at JJR,” he continued. “We’re grateful and humbled to have this opportunity to support the health and well-being of our community in this way.”
