Dayton-Area Students Receive 2023 JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarships

Dayton, Ohio – Three Dayton-area high school graduates have been selected as recipients of the 2023 JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship.

Aaliyah Ewings, Lauren Hill, and Jaliya LeRoy will each receive a renewable-per-year scholarship over a four-year period to pursue their college degrees.

Ewings, a 2023 graduate of Trotwood-Madison High School, will attend The Ohio State University and major in pre-nursing. Her inspiration to be a nurse came after seeing the wonderful way medical staff treated her ailing grandmother in the hospital. She hopes to use her passion for biology and medicine to help transform the lives of others. Ewings volunteers at Dayton-area nursing homes and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society.

Hill, a 2023 graduate of Stivers School for the Arts, will attend West Virginia University, majoring in design studies. Her numerous community service projects through the Girl Scouts resulted in her earning a prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award. Though her dyslexia could have been an obstacle in her school career, she has not let it stop her from achieving her educational goals.

LeRoy, a 2023 graduate of Stebbins High School, will attend The Ohio State University and major in English with a concentration in creative writing. She lives by the motto, “Stop complaining and start appreciating,” after a friend’s fatal car accident taught her that life is too precious to spend it focusing on the negative. LeRoy is a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society.

“We are honored to assist these students as they pursue their goals. This next chapter of life is new and exciting, and we’re glad we can be a part of that in some small way,” said JJR Solutions Chief Executive Officer Dave Judson. “Their stories are inspiring and full of grit, and I can’t wait to see the great things they achieve.”

Established in 2019 through The Dayton Foundation, the JJR Solutions Starfish Scholarship fund rewards students who exhibit courage, resolve, character, and positive influence in their communities.

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior from a select group of Dayton-area school districts.

  • Demonstrate financial need.

  • Demonstrate an active role in community involvement and/or extracurricular activities.

  • Write an essay telling how they made a positive difference or inspired others.

“Being able to contribute to the education of young people in our community is completely in line with our purpose at JJR,” shared Judson. “We’re grateful and humbled to support the next generation of Dayton leaders in this way.”
